Reaching Venue

The venue, JN Tata auditorium is a part of the National Science Seminar Complex (NSSC) located within IISc campus.

From Airport

The IISc campus is about 35kms from the airport. The Institute is known as “Tata Institute” to the locals and is just past Mekhri circle and on the way to Yesvantpur (Yeswanthpur/ Yashavantapura) station (one must take a right turn at Mekhri circle while coming from airport). An airport bus service (Vayu Vajra), operated by Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), runs from the airport to various areas in Bengaluru city every 15 minutes. To get to IISc from the airport, you can use KIA Route 10, and get down at the ‘Tata Institute’ drop point near Main Gate. Alternatively, you can also use KIA Route 9 to get down at ‘Mekhri Circle’ bus stop and then take an auto from there to ‘Tata Institute’, which is the name by which autorickshaw and cab drivers tend to know IISc. Details of the BMTC bus schedule can be found here

One could take a prepaid taxi such as Ola and Uber (counter is available near the exit of the Airport Building), or a city taxi (a queue for the same is just outside the airport building). Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has teamed up with Refex eVeelz to roll out electric taxis for passengers, making traveling eco-friendly and convenient. These eco-friendly airport taxis can be conveniently booked by passengers either at the airport taxi stands or through the ‘BLR Pulse’ mobile app (available in Google Play and the Apple Store). With a minimum fare of Rs 100 for the initial 4 kilometres and Rs 24 for every additional kilometre, travellers can enjoy affordable and environmentally friendly rides. Users can also opt for BluSmart cabs having a 100% EV fleet and is available at designated pickup zones in BLR through the mobile app (available in Google Play and the Apple Store).

A special ‘women drivers’ cab service is available at BLR. Women driven taxis offer a safe mode of transport for women passengers. Women drivers called ‘Pilots’ operate these cabs that are available 24×7 at BLR and can be booked by women passengers only. Women driven Cabs offers rides in premium sedans that can accommodate up to four persons. Their fleet is stationed at the Arrivals gate at Terminal 1 (near Hatti Kaapi). This service does not require pre-booking. Women passengers can hire the women driven taxis from the parking spot at Terminal 1 Arrivals. Fare payment can be through cash or UPI. These cabs are centrally monitored by the service provider and equipped with GPS trackers, SOS (panic button) and fire extinguishers. All ‘Pilots’ are fluent in multiple Indian languages and English and are trained in self-defence techniques. More details can be found here

From City Railway Station and Majestic Bus Station

The City Railway station (SBC) and Majestic bus station are opposite to each other and is about 7 kms from the IISc campus. One will have to leave the railway station from platform number ONE and reach the prepaid taxi stand and hire a city taxi (costs about Rs 150).  Prepaid auto rickshaw facility is also available at railway and bus stations. You could tell the person at the pre-paid counter that you are travelling to Tata Institute. A trip to IISc may cost about Rs. 90 to 100. Travel by auto rickshaws between 10:00 p.m. and 06:00 a.m. will cost 50% more. You can also use the bus services on Route 276 from the Majestic bus station and get down at the Main Gate of IISc.

From Yesvantpur (Yeswanthpur/ Yashavantapura) Railway Station

The Yesvantpur (Yeswanthpur/ Yashavantapura) railway station is located less than 2 km from the institute campus. One can take a ‘pre-paid’ auto from the counter located outside the exit gate of platform number 6. The prepaid autos shouldn’t charge more than Rs. 80 (as of Sep 2013), and is the best deal given the options available. The landmark is CNR Rao Circle from where one would take the entry to IISc through Main Gate. Though the prepaid contract says IISc (Tata Institute as more popularly known) Main Gate as the destination, the hostels and most of the academic departments are within 500 meters from the gate, and hence the auto can be requested to drop at your destination. You can also use the bus services on Route 252-A and 253-S.

In and Around the IISc Campus

Traveling inside the IISc campus is convenient. The campus offers a free electric rickshaw shuttle service that operates on fixed routes, covering key areas like academic departments, hostels, and the main gate. The e-rickshaws plying on campus are designed, manufactured and operated by Transvahan Technologies India Pvt Ltd. They seat up to four people and run at slow speeds (roughly around 10-15 km/hr), meant for sustainable and emission-free transport. The Transvahan e-rickshaw initiative came into action in March 2018 and was steered by IISc Sustainable Transportation Lab (IST Lab). The schedule, route and timings of the e-rickshaw can be found here. Cycling is also a popular choice among students, with dedicated cycle stands and pathways throughout the campus. For those who prefer walking, the lush, green environment makes it a pleasant experience.
