About Dept. of Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, established in 1950, is a leading institution known for its excellence in teaching and research. As it celebrates 75 years of achievements, the department attracts top students from across India and has a distinguished alumni network with influential roles worldwide. It offers a range of academic programs, including research-based PhD and M.Tech (Res) degrees, as well as course-based M.Tech degree with major in; Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Systems Engineering, Water Resource Engineering, and Dam Engineering. Recognized as a Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) by the University Grants Commission, the department benefits from extensive funding from the Department of Science and Technology and engages in both national and international collaborations, addressing interdisciplinary challenges and providing industry consultancy.

The Transportation Systems Engineering (TSE) Group, the newest of the department’s four research groups, was formally established in 2017, though TSE-related activities began in 2009 with the appointment of Prof. Ashish Verma. The TSE Group includes four faculty members—Dr. Satyavati Komaragiri, Dr. Tarun Rambha, Prof. Abdul Pinjari, and Prof. Ashish Verma—whose research covers diverse areas such as material characterization, network equilibrium, consumer behavior, and sustainable transportation. The group aims to become a global leader in transportation research through its high-impact and quality research and education.
