About IST Lab

The IISc Sustainable Transportation Lab (IST Lab), established in 2009 by Prof. Ashish Verma, is a notable initiative at IISc aimed at promoting sustainable communities through innovative transportation planning and policy development. The lab’s research interests encompass a wide range of topics including climate change, quality of life, travel behavior, and the modeling and optimization of transport systems. By advocating for sustainability and resilience in transportation, the IST Lab seeks to enhance the quality of life and contribute to India’s economic and social progress.

Celebrating 15 glorious years of commitment and contribution to sustainable transportation, the IST Lab has been involved in several impactful projects, such as Innovating for Clean Air (IfCA), which addresses air quality issues; The Kumbha Mela experiment, which explores large-scale event transportation challenges; Institutionalizing Gender SMART Mobility, which focuses on integrating gender considerations into transportation planning; and Gender Astute Mobility, aimed at improving gender equity in transport systems.

With a dedicated team of 15 researchers currently engaged in various programs, the IST Lab has established a global alumni network of over 70+ members who have advanced careers in transportation planning, research, and academia. The lab’s ongoing commitment to sustainable transportation drives innovations that support both environmental sustainability and societal well-being through transformative transportation solutions. The IST Lab will be the secretariat for WSSTL-2025.
